The Bloo Birdie Method™ Collection
Raising Children Who Want to Learn, Connect + Explore.
What if the goal wasn't simply to raise children who follow directions, earn good grades, or collect information?
What if we helped raise children who are internally motivated to wonder, try, connect, create, problem-solve, and keep learning—even when no one is telling them to?
Welcome to The Bloo Birdie Method™ Collection.
A growing collection of books, tools, conversations, and resources designed to help parents, caregivers, and educators better understand what motivates children—and how the environments we create can help that motivation grow.
The Big Idea Motivation Before Information.
Children today are growing up with more information available to them than any generation before.
The challenge of the future may not simply be:
Can you find the answer?
It may increasingly become:
What will you do with what you know?
As technology and AI make information easier to access, qualities like curiosity, judgment, creativity, resilience, relationships, and intrinsic motivation become increasingly important.
The Bloo Birdie Method™ asks us to look beyond how much a child knows and consider something deeper:
Do they want to learn?
Do they believe they can?
Do they feel connected enough to try?
Where the Method Begins
Three Psychological Needs
The Bloo Birdie Method™ draws inspiration from established research in human motivation, particularly Self-Determination Theory, developed by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan.
Their work identifies three basic psychological needs that support autonomous motivation and well-being:
Autonomy
“I have some choice + ownership.”
Children need developmentally appropriate opportunities to make choices, express preferences, follow interests, and participate in decisions that affect their experiences.
Autonomy doesn't mean children make every decision.
It means they experience themselves as an active participant in their own life.
Competence
“I can do this + I'm getting better.”
Confidence doesn't come from being told we're good at everything.
It develops through experience.
Trying.
Practicing.
Struggling.
Problem-solving.
Making mistakes.
Trying again.
And eventually realizing:
I did it.
Children need opportunities to develop real skills and experience the satisfaction that comes from becoming more capable.
Relatedness
“I feel connected + I belong.”
Children learn within relationships.
Feeling known, supported, included, and connected creates an important foundation from which children can explore the world around them.
Before asking children to engage, participate, or take risks, we should consider whether they first feel:
Do I belong here?
From Needs to Outcomes.
What Happens When Children Feel Supported?
The Bloo Birdie Method™ explores a simple question:
If we intentionally create environments that support Autonomy, Competence + Relatedness, what qualities might have more room to develop?
Our work centers around three:
Connection • Compassion • Curiosity
Compassion
“I can recognize that someone else's experience matters.”
When children feel secure in their own relationships, we can help them look outward.
Compassion develops through everyday opportunities to notice others, understand different perspectives, practice kindness, and recognize their impact on the people around them.
Connection
“I know how to belong—and help others belong too.”
Connection begins with relationships but extends beyond them.
Children learn how to communicate, collaborate, repair, participate, listen, and become contributing members of their families and communities.
Curiosity
“I wonder what happens if...”
Curiosity turns information into exploration.
It encourages children to ask questions, test ideas, investigate possibilities, create something new, and continue learning long after an assignment ends.
We don't simply want children who know answers.
We want children who keep asking meaningful questions.

Creating Space For
CONNECTION • COMPASSION • CURIOSITY
The Bloo Birdie Method™ isn't about guaranteeing a particular outcome.
It's about intentionally creating environments where these qualities have room to grow.
